SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
600 Pleasant Valley Drive
Little Rock, Arkansas 72227 USA
Second Presbyterian Church was founded in 1882 with 14 charter members. Since then, the congregation has grown to include over 1,700 members, making it the largest Presbyterian Church in Arkansas. As a community of worship, inquiry, fellowship, and care, members and visitors worship together in a spirit of reverence and joy. The congregation studies together with reasoned and reflective faith, and work together for compassion, justice, and peace in the world.
A full twenty-five percent of the church’s annual budget goes to serve those in need outside the walls of Second Presbyterian – locally, nationally, and internationally. Led by a staff of three ordained ministers, a Church Educator, a Youth Director, a Music Director and Associate Music Director, Second Presbyterian provides a variety of opportunities for Christian nurture and service for children, youth, and adults.
The Adult Choir of Second Presbyterian Church is part of the church’s dynamic music program and includes more than 70 members. All choir members participate in leading and supporting weekly services throughout the calendar year, as well as offering special music for important church events such as Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas. The choir regularly offers large choral works as well as traditional American sacred music for the congregation of Second Presbyterian Church.
The choir’s touring under the direction of Dr. Bevan Keating began in 2010 with a tour of Scotland. Recent tours have included Western Canada (2012); a tour of Germany, Austria, and Hungary (2014); and a tour of the United Kingdom including Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Large works presented by the Adult Choir include Gian-Carlo Menotti’s opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in conjunction with instrumentalists from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Festival Ballet, the UALR Concert and Community choruses, and the choirs of five local high schools.
The past three years have seen many exciting developments in the music program of Second Presbyterian Church. A new musical outreach endeavor was begun with the establishment of Praeclara – a performing arts organization dedicated to offering unique and exemplary arts programming to Arkansas audiences. Praeclara specializes in combining many artistic genres — including choral, orchestral, operatic, and dance performances — to present unusual takes on popular artistic masterworks. The Adult Choir provides invaluable support to Praeclara through their nuanced and powerful performances as a large chorus. This includes the 2015 presentation in conjunction with Praeclara and the UALR Choruses of parts II and III of Handel’s Messiah in Messiah: Passion and Resurrection, a semi-staged performance of the Lenten and Easter portions of Handel’s oratorio.
